The general take
Keith Humphreys explains that The Big Book is essentially a collection of stories designed to help people see themselves reflected in others' experiences, with the unglamorous origin story that it got its name simply from being printed on cheap, thick paper during the Depression rather than any grand design. He frames it positively as a pragmatic tool where the hope is that readers will find something resonant enough to spark recognition and connection.
About
Alcoholics Anonymous (also known as the Big Book in recovery circles) sets forth cornerstone concepts of recovery from alcoholism and tells the stories of men and women who have overcome the disease. The fourth edition includes twenty-four new stories that provide contemporary sharing for newcomers seeking recovery from alcoholism in A.A. during the early years of the 21st century. Sixteen stories are retained from the third edition, including the "Pioneers of A.A." section, which helps the reader remain linked to A.A.'s historic roots, and shows how early members applied this simple but profound program that helps alcoholics get sober today. Approximately 21 million copies of the first three editions of "Alcoholics Anonymous" have been distributed. It is expected that the new fourth edition will play its part in passing on A.A.'s basic message of recovery.

โฆreference to AA's foundational text using stories for connection and recovery
โIf you read, you know, it's called The Big Book. It's actually just a clock. It was called The Big Book because it was printed on cheap paper. So it was sort of fat and pulpy. This was back in the Depression. Right. It says flat out this book is mostly stories and we tell stories in the hopes that something in them will catch you and say, gosh, that life is like mine.โ
