Gary Shteyngart

Gary Shteyngart is a Russian-American novelist and essayist known for his darkly comic, dystopian and satirical fiction. He is the author of acclaimed books including “Super Sad True Love Story,” “Absurdistan,” and “The Russian Debutante’s Handbook.” He currently writes fiction and nonfiction, including the forthcoming essay collection “The Sensualist: Adventures in Pure Pleasure.”

There was an excerpt in The New Yorker. This, I think, is his most memoiristic novel. I think a lot of his own background goes into this.”

I hope I pronounced that correctly. Set in New Jersey. I love anything set in New Jersey. Talk about dystopia, right? That is the best. Really dark humor, but as dark as it is funny.”

“And the third book is Julia Joffi's Motherland, which was a National Book Awards finalist. An old friend of mine, also Soviet-born, Moscow to my Leningrad. And it's a book about what the Soviet Union was ostensibly this feminist, progressive society. But guess what? It treated women like shit. This book really helped me understand a lot of my own background.”
